What Inspires You?

In my office, there is a decorative sign that says, “I want every girl to know her voice can change the world” and it is one of the most inspiring messages that I live by. 

You can’t actually see my office, but it’s adorned with all of the IGNITE show posters, another dozen action shots that speak to me as well as plaques from various awards I have won over the past few years.  It’s my favorite space because it reminds me of how far I’ve come in wrestling and inspires me to keep growing.

So that made me think and wonder, what inspires you? What gets you out of bed every day?

The question focuses on inspiration and positivity. It’s asking us to look at the things in which we find joy and satisfaction. It gets us to explore the good parts of our lives and the exhilarating components of our day.

If you’re having a hard time articulating what gets you out of bed every day, don’t worry. It’s probably just that you haven’t thought about that question before.

Find some quiet time where you can think. Consider your job/career for the past year. Write down the times you were most excited. Document the days you were most satisfied with. Don’t think about their attributes yet–just jot down those reminders of those great days.

After you’ve captured maybe 10 or 15 days you felt were great, think about what made them great.

Note what you were doing. List the people you were working with. Define which parts of the day were exciting, fulfilling, and interesting. Do so for every day on that list.

Now look for themes. Are your most satisfying days the ones where you worked with a particular set or type of people? Do they have a common challenge you faced? Was it a specific kind of work you were doing?

You’d be surprised that once you drill down on your best dozen days this past year that you will find that there are certain similarities.  In my own retrospective, I have discovered that three people who support me heavily in my career were either present or helped me get to that day.  

“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

I believe there is no more powerful life hack in the history of the world than the people you choose to surround yourself with. Start a business, change careers, lose 50 pounds, run a marathon. No matter what you’re looking to do, the people change everything. And the beauty of it is that who we choose to hang out with (or choose not to) is 100% in our control.

So are you surrounding yourself with people who drive and inspire you to be more, push more, do more?  Or are you surrounded with people who live in the past, push themselves, and keep others down? What kind of messed up way of living is that? 

Motivation is not magic. It does not come in a bottle. There is no little blue pill for it.

But, it’s something you can tap into by design then harness. Every inspirational author, athlete and life coach has their own tips and strategies and you can take advantage of those as well.

Set a goal and visualize it down to the most minute detail. See it, feel it, hear the applause. Many athletes visualize their performance ahead of time — right down to the cheers of the crowd as your arm is raised in victory.  There is power in visualizing your goals and reaching them. 

So break down the steps that it will take you to get to that booking, work for that company and achieve that accolade.  Write them down because words have power. Break them down into small manageable steps so every small success feeds the feel good centers of your brain and keeps your pushing forward.

Yes, you will have days that your motivation and inspiration fails you but that’s why it is key to have those people there and reminders to keep you working toward your goals.  Whether it is a workout partner, social media friend or a plaque that stares you in the face then you need to find what keeps you going. You got the fire inside you so now you need to keep that flame fanned.
